Translate the following sentences, paying particular attention to the German das:
1. Marlene liebte das Leben.
2. Ich weiß nicht viel über das Leben von Konfuzius.
1. Marlene loved life.
2. I don’t know much about the life of Confucius.
Abstract nouns are often used without the definite article in English in cases where German has the article. But when the noun is further qualified by an of- phrase, a relative clause or a participial construction, the article is required.
